PD & GRIP Mode
If you’re a PhD student currently in a GRIP or Professional Development (PD) Mode, you may have received information about recent updates to the Monash Doctoral Program. This page explains what’s changing, who’s affected, and what you need to do next.
Do I need to make a change?
If you are in PD/GRIP Mode, you will fall into one of two categories. Here’s a snapshot of whether you will have an option to transition. Please check your inbox for the exact guidance as the table below is for general guidance only.
| NOT AFFECTED | OPTION TO TRANSITION | |
|---|---|---|
| HOURS | You HAVE completed all your PD hours or GRIP activities | You have NOT yet completed your PD hours or GRIP activities |
| ACTION | NO ACTION REQUIRED You will have received an email on 27 October to tell you that you are not affected | ACTION REQUIRED Respond via the online form in your inbox by 21 November 2025. |
What are the options?
If you have received an email with a link to a form offering you one of two options, here is a summary of what they are for PD & GRIP Mode students:
OPTION 1: Transition to the new flexible model | OPTION 2: Stay in your current program | |
|---|---|---|
| PD hours or GRIP activities | Voluntary - choose what's relevant to you | Mandatory - must complete 120 hours |
| Milestone progression | No PD requirements at milestones | Must evidence PD progress at milestones |
| Hours tracking | No hours to track | Must track and record all hours |
| PD options | Any development opportunity | Only activities from the approved Monash suite of professional development can be used for your hours requirement |
| Summary | PD is voluntary, giving you more flexibility to shape your PD experience. | PD structure continues with 120 hours mandatory activity. |
How are students deciding? Here’s some examples
Every student's situation is different. Here's how four students are approaching this decision:
Sam - Mid-candidature, seeking flexibility
- Currently midway through PhD with 65 PD hours completed
- Wants more control over their professional development choices
Yuen Yee - Nearly finished, staying the course
- Has 92 PD hours completed with final milestone in early 2026
- Completing an internship that will add significant hours by December
May - Balancing work and research
- Works part-time in industry alongside PhD studies
- Finds current PD requirements difficult to balance with work commitments
Arjun - Already completed, no action needed
- Final year candidate who has completed all PD hours
- Focused entirely on thesis completion
Haven't received an email?
You may not need to do anything, but it's important to check. Most PhD students should have received an email from the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training), outlining the changes and your available options.
If you haven’t received this email:
- Check your Monash student email account, including your spam folder
- Look for an email from the PVC-RT with the subject line: “Changes to your Monash Doctoral Program” or “Update on the Monash Doctoral Program”
- If you haven’t received an email, it may mean:
- You have submitted your thesis for examination
- You are currently on leave
If none of these apply to you, or you’re still unsure, please contact mdp-transition@monash.edu for advice.
FAQs
Q: I have already completed my re-enrolment for next year and have received an email about changes to my PhD program. Do I still need to complete the form in the email?
Yes, these are two separate processes. You should complete the form relating to the change of your PhD course as well as complete your re-enrolment for next year.
Q: How do I know if I have the option to change?
If you have received an email offering you the choice to change, you are eligible to transition to the new course version. Whether you are given the option depends on your current progress through your PhD and your faculty’s course structure.
Q: What does “transition to the new flexible model” mean and how do I decide whether to change or stay in my current course version?
This means choosing to move into a new version of your PhD course that no longer requires you to complete 120 hours of professional development or coursework units (depending on your program). It’s designed to give you more flexibility while still supporting your research and career goals.
If you’ve been offered the option to change, you’re at a stage of your candidature where the change could benefit you. Whether you change is completely up to you - there’s no right or wrong choice. Talk to your supervisors and your graduate research coordinators/ directors about your decision.
Q: If I decide to stay in my current PhD program, will I be disadvantaged?
Not at all. If you choose to stay in your current program, you’ll continue to have access to the training, support and resources to help you meet your program requirements.
We’re committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of course version, receive the guidance and opportunities they need to succeed.
Q: If I choose to change into a new course version, and my professional development is no longer mandatory, will I still have access to training, development opportunities, or alternatives to support my research and career goals?
All PhD students, regardless of which course version they’re in, will continue to have access to high quality professional development. If you choose to move into the new flexible model where professional development is voluntary, you’ll still be able to participate in a wide range of activities aligned with the Research Training Competency Framework. These opportunities are designed to support your research, enhance your skills and help you achieve your career goals.
We’re committed to supporting your success and we encourage you to take advantage of the resources available to you.
Q: I’ve already completed some professional development/coursework — can I still include it on my CV?
Any professional development or coursework units you’ve completed, including those you may do in the future, can be included in your CV and academic profile. You can download a record of your training through myDevelopment following the instructions available here.
Q: How will the removal of professional development and coursework requirements affect other parts of my candidature, like milestones, thesis submission, scholarships, or internships?
Choosing to transition into the new flexible course version will not affect your academic progression or any key aspects of your candidature.
Your milestone, thesis submission timeline, scholarship eligibility will remain exactly the same. For detailed guidance, please refer to the following:
Q: I need more information before I make a decision. Where can I learn more?
If you’re unsure or would like to understand the changes in more detail, we’re here to help. We’re running online information sessions where you can learn more about changes to the Monash PhD. You can register for a session here.
A recording of the session will be made available on the MDP Update website if you cannot attend a session.
