If Monash is to be your home institution, normal Monash admission and scholarship application procedures apply. If Monash is to be your host institution, please speak with your preferred home institution about their application process.
Where a joint graduate research arrangement does not already exist, you may take advantage of other opportunities to conduct part of your research at another university, or perhaps more than one.
You can pursue up to 12 months study away from Monash at other universities as part of your degree as long as you have permission from your supervisor and the Graduate Research Committee. Please see the Managing your Travel website for further information.
Monash home students can apply for assistance with the costs of travel to one of our partner universities through a travel grant application. Your supervisor may also have project funds to contribute.
You must be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds for the period of your study overseas prior to departure.
Health and travel insurance are not the same and it is likely you will require both.
If you are travelling to one of our partner institutions, you will need to consult with your partner institution regarding any health insurance requirements that are specific to that country.
Travel insurance is provided to all actively enrolled Monash students. You will be automatically covered for up to 365 days when travelling overseas. You are also covered for 60 days personal travel before and after the Monash approved activity (within the 365 day coverage period). If you are coming to Monash as a host student, you must arrange compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your time in Melbourne. This is mandatory and forms part of your visa requirement. For travel insurance, please speak to your home institution on what options are available to you.
A supervisor's role is to support you and offer guidance, and in the early stages, help you organise your initial objectives.
As a joint award student, you will have a minimum of two supervisors - one from each institution. Your supervisors will collaborate throughout your enrolment, providing advice and resources from both your home and host institutions to assist you with your specific research project. You will have regular contact with your supervisory team throughout your program.
Completion and assessment policies differ between Monash and partner institutions. To receive your Joint PhD degree you must abide by the requirements of both institutions. Generally speaking however, examination is undertaken at your home institution.
Note that a partner university in the northern hemisphere is likely to require you to participate in an oral examination as well as your normal written thesis examination.
