Do I need to make a change?

If you are in Coursework Mode, you will fall into one of two categories. Here’s a snapshot of whether you will have an option to transition. Please check your inbox for the exact guidance as the table below is for general guidance only.

Haven’t received an email?

You may not need to do anything, but it's important to check. Most PhD students should have received an email from the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training), outlining the changes and your available options.

If you haven’t received this email:

• Check your Monash student email account, including your spam folder
• Look for an email from the PVC-RT with the subject line: “Changes to your Monash Doctoral Program” or “Update on the Monash Doctoral Program”
• If you haven’t received an email, it may mean:
  • You have submitted your thesis for examination
  • You are currently on leave

FAQs

Q: I have already completed my re-enrolment for next year and have received an email about changes to my PhD program. Do I still need to complete the form in the email?

Yes, these are two separate processes. You should complete the form relating to the change of your PhD course as well as complete your re-enrolment for next year.

Q: How do I know if I have the option to change?

If you have received an email offering you the choice to change, you are eligible to transition to the new course version. Whether you are given the option depends on your current progress through your PhD and your faculty’s course structure.

Q: What does “transition to the new flexible model” mean and how do I decide whether to change or stay in my current course version?

This means choosing to move into a new version of your PhD course that no longer requires you to complete any coursework units (depending on your program). It’s designed to give you more flexibility while still supporting your research and career goals.

If you’ve been offered the option to change, you’re at a stage of your candidature where the change could benefit you. Whether you change is completely up to you - there’s no right or wrong choice. Talk to your supervisors and your graduate research coordinators/ directors about your decision.

Q: What does "transition to the new flexible model" mean when my coursework program isn't changing?

Until now, every PhD at Monash required either professional development hours or coursework units. We've removed this University-wide mandate, allowing faculties to decide what works best for their disciplines.

Your faculty reviewed their program and determined that coursework remains integral to your discipline's research training. Your program structure isn't changing - you'll continue with your existing coursework requirements.

If you received a notification, it's to keep you informed, but no action is required from you.

Q: If I decide to stay in my current PhD program, will I be disadvantaged?

Not at all. If you choose to stay in your current program, you’ll continue to have access to the training, support and resources to help you meet your program requirements.

We’re committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of course version, receive the guidance and opportunities they need to succeed.

Q: If I choose to change into a new course version, and my professional development is no longer mandatory, will I still have access to training, development opportunities, or alternatives to support my research and career goals?

All PhD students, regardless of which course version they’re in, will continue to have access to high quality professional development. If you choose to move into the new flexible model where professional development is voluntary, you’ll still be able to participate in a wide range of activities aligned with the Research Training Competency Framework. These opportunities are designed to support your research, enhance your skills and help you achieve your career goals.

Q: I’ve already completed some professional development/coursework — can I still include it on my CV?

Any professional development or coursework units you’ve completed, including those you may do in the future, can be included in your CV and academic profile. You can download a record of your training through myDevelopment following the instructions available here.

Q: How will the removal of coursework requirements affect other parts of my candidature, like milestones, thesis submission, scholarships, or internships?

Choosing to transition into the new flexible course version will not affect your academic progression or any key aspects of your candidature.

Your milestone, thesis submission timeline, scholarship eligibility will remain exactly the same. For detailed guidance, please refer to the following:

Q: I need more information before I make a decision. Where can I learn more?

Q: I’ve already completed one or more coursework units - will they still be recognised if I change to the new course version?

Any coursework you’ve already completed as part of your old course version will still appear on your transcript. Even though it’s no longer required, it still counts as valuable learning and supports your research and future career.

Q: Will reducing or removing coursework affect the quality of my PhD?

Your PhD is still a robust research degree, and you’ll continue to be assessed on your research milestones and thesis. Coursework is one way to support your development, but it’s not the only way. You’ll still have access to training and support to help you succeed.

Q: If I opt in to the new course version, can I audit coursework units?

Coursework units can be audited with the permission of the Unit Coordinator. Some units may have pre-requisites or quotas, and some areas may have specific requirements or limitations (placements, lab work or other factors) that will prevent auditing. Contact the Unit Coordinator for guidance in the first instance.
