Thesis including Published Works : Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture Guidelines
Scope
These requirements apply to:
- Applicants wishing to apply for Thesis Including Published Works format in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
Summary
Academic research is traditionally published as papers or articles in academic journals, commonly referred to as “publications.” For the purposes of the thesis with publication guidelines, a “publication” can be defined as:
- An unpublished manuscript that has been accepted for publication by a reputable publisher;
- A monograph, book chapter, or journal article published by a reputable publisher;
- An equivalent research output in creative practice non-traditional disciplines that has been accepted for review by a reputable professional or commercial body, or has been publicly released under that body’s auspices in a format appropriate to the discipline.
- Only those publications that are published or accepted for publication post commencement of the PhD would be eligible to be included in Thesis Including Published Works.
Please refer to the “Authorship” section in the generic thesis with publication guidelines for details on the extent of contribution required from a student for a paper or work to be included in the thesis. In the MADA context publication also refers to mediums appropriate to Art, Design and Architecture creative practice. Exhibitable outcomes and venues can be found on the faculty quality list. Candidates who are submitting via Thesis by Published works require supervisory and ADGR approval.
Authorship
The initiation, key ideas, development, and writing of each work included as a publication must be the student’s responsibility. For multi-authored papers submitted in a thesis, the student’s contribution is expected to be substantial and significant, and should be no less than 50%. In such cases, the student would typically be listed as the first author. Papers in which the student has made only minor contributions should be listed in the “List of Research Outputs.”
Framing Material
A thesis that incorporates published works must include an integrative discussion that unifies the various elements. The format and placement of this discussion will depend on the content and the number of included papers or works. It may:
- Serve as the introduction, outlining the research questions addressed and contextualising the research within the existing literature;
- Be spread across both the introduction and conclusion of the thesis; or
- Be distributed across the introduction, conclusion, and included as linking text between individual papers or works and other thesis material, as appropriate.
Depending on the content and number of papers or works included, it may be necessary to add supplementary text, such as a chapter, to adequately cover methodology, techniques, validation, etc.
Process
A candidate considering Thesis Including Published Works should have the initial discussion with their primary supervisor and/or supervisory team and get their approval and submit a case for the ADGR review and approval.
