Application Rounds

The CSIRO iPhD program commenced with a pilot round in 2023. From 2024 onwards, the scheme has been delivered in two rounds annually.

Expression of Interest (EOI) Process

CSIRO has introduced a new online submission system for EOIs.

University, industry and CSIRO supervisors are now required to collaboratively complete the online EOI form via the iPhD submission portal.

The leading party (university, CSIRO or industry) will need to register an account.
The leading party will then need to invite the other parties to register an account.
Each party must upload evidence of support from their approving delegate. Monash supervisors should use the University approval template to communicate program requirements to seek approval from your Faculty Graduate Research Office.

After the closing date, CSIRO will conduct a three-week assessment period for all submitted EOIs. Outcomes will be communicated to supervisory teams via email.

The online platform is designed for university, industry, and CSIRO supervisors who wish to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a new iPhD project.
The leading partner must first register an account and initiate the EOI. They will then invite the other project partners to register and access the EOI form. All invited partners must review and agree to each section of the EOI before submission.
As part of the submission process, endorsement from the relevant Graduate Research Offices is required. All partners are granted view, edit, and submit permissions within the platform; however, the designated leading partner cannot be changed once the EOI is initiated.
Any partner may submit the EOI on behalf of the group. Upon submission, an automated acknowledgement email is sent to the leading partner, who will receive the majority of correspondence through the platform. All partners will be notified of the final EOI outcome via email.
Government and not-for-profit entities where an industry relevant experience can be provided to the student are able to participate. However, there is a strong preference for private for-profit industry partners, particularly in the Small to Medium Enterprise sector.
The Program requires that the PhD candidate be domestic.
Students must be sought through an open advertising process facilitated by the involved university.
Each supervisor will be responsible for certain aspects of the student’s supervision. However, the Primary Supervisor, will be from the from the university, and is responsible for monitoring and assessing the PhD student progress in accordance with university academic requirements.
Yes, the University does process finances for CSIRO iPhDs—primarily for stipend payment, in some cases research project funds, and administrative oversight.
Monash works in partnership with CSIRO and the industry partner to ensure funds are managed according to agreements and student support is maintained throughout the candidature.
