A student can undertake the internship at any point throughout their course, provided they satisfy the internship requirements before they complete their course.
For a research internship to be considered an "Eligible internship" and receive the completion weighting, the internship must be agreed to (e.g through a the letter of intent or Agreement) PRIOR to 18 months FTE.
The internship is counted as candidature time. Students cannot intermit their candidature to undertake the internship.
Research end-user (REU; defined by TSCI) is an individual, community or organisation external to academia that will directly use or directly benefit from the output, outcome or results of the research.
REU include: businesses, governments, non-governmental organisations, communities and community organisations.
Specific exclusions of REU are:
- Other higher education providers
- Organisations that are affiliates, controlled entities or subsidiaries (such as Medical Research Institutes) of a higher education provider
- Equivalents (international or domestic) of the above exclusions

The above University position enables Hospitals and publicly funding research organisations such as CSIRO to be considered a REU for the purposes of an eligible Research Internship.

No, the supervisor is not a signatory on the internship agreement. The agreement is signed by the Industry partner (e.g. Research End User) and Monash - represented by the relevant delegated authority within your faculty (e.g. Associate Dean - Graduate Research).
The student (project) schedule (an addendum to the agreement) is signed by the student, Industry (e.g. research end user) and Monash (e.g. ADGR).
You should receive a copy of the executed agreement by the service providers (APR.Intern, Monash College) managing your research internship.
Self-sourced internship agreements that are not managed with a service provider may be supported by your Faculty.
A Letter of Intent (LOI) secures in writing the intent to undertake a research internship with an industry partner. The LOI is required where securing an internship that will be commenced at a later date.
The LOI details key information including the R&D activities you will be undertaking, the duration of the internship and industry partner details. It is signed by your student, the industry partner (e.g. research end user) and Monash (e.g. Associate Dean Graduate Research).
Your student can approach the faculty graduate research to support them in obtaining the Monash signature.
- The Letter of Intent must be completed within 18 months (FTE) of commencement of your candidature.
- A Letter of Intent is required unless a fully executed (signed) formal agreement in place within 18months of your student's course commencement.
- Once the formal written agreement is in place, your student must apply to vary their enrolment via the online form and upload the Letter of Intent and/or the Agreement.

It must be an eligible internship as defined by Department of Education and described in the Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines clause 1.4.13 Requirements of an eligible research internship.
An eligible research internship must:
- be undertaken by a Research Doctorate student;
- be a minimum of three calendar months in duration;
- include 60 full-time equivalent days of engagement in R&D activities undertaken by the student; and
- be related to the student’s Research Doctorate area of research.
Advertised opportunities and general applications (seeking an opportunity) are considered through the relevant application process established by each service provider.
The service provider will guide students through their matching process, including interviews where required, and provide outcomes to all student applications.
Yes, the student must remain actively enrolled while undertaking an internship. As an enrolled student of the University, they will be covered by Monash University insurance.
