D8001 - Doctor of Philosophy (Education-focused creative work)

Oral presentation
Maximum 20 minutes duration describing project scope and aims.

Submission
Written document of between 8,000 - 10,000 words, containing material focusing on the two thesis elements: the creative component and the research component, in a 50/50 split, with some flexibility of 60/40 (creative component/exegesis component) permitted.* This includes:

  • A segment of the creative component and a focus on the overall creative project
  • Analytical commentary describing the theoretical context of the overall project and relationship between the creative component and exegesis

Submission should have clear connections between the research and creative components. It should contain:

  • Faculty template cover page (including generative AI acknowledgement)
  • Statement of research problem/s:
    • Introduction
    • Research questions or hypothesis
  • Significance/expected outcomes of the study
  • Literature review of relevant research
  • Theoretical/conceptual framework
  • Method of inquiry (could include):
    • Framework of creative component
    • Theoretical and conceptual framework
    • Analytical techniques

Submission must also include:

  • Proposed structure of final submission
  • Timeline for project completion / statement of progress to date on both the creative and research component.

Students must submit their written work to the panel at least one week prior to the presentation.

Total word count excludes the cover page and AI acknowledgement.

Note: Students intending to prepare and submit a thesis including published works should include demonstration of, or a statement of progress towards, such publications in the written submission.

*For artwork, performance, multimodal creative works, the number of words is approximate equivalence.

Progress Review

Oral presentation
Maximum 20 minutes duration describing the project in detail.

Submission
Written document of 10,000 words of substantially new thesis material containing:

  • Progress report of 1,500-2,000 words including:
    • Faculty template cover page (including generative AI acknowledgement)
    • Contextualising statement
    • Response to previous panel comments and suggestions
  • Fully-drafted/prepared segment of creative component (approximately 5,000 words or equivalent)
  • Fully-drafted exegesis segment (approximately 5,000 words)
  • Proposed structure of final submission
  • Detailed timeline for completion for both the creative and research component

Students must submit their written work to the panel at least one week prior to the presentation.

Total word count excludes the cover page and AI acknowledgement.

Final Review

Oral presentation
Maximum 20 minutes duration at milestone seminar, including:

  • Overview and current state of the project (in detail)
  • Timeline and plans for completion of thesis
  • The contribution/s of the research to knowledge

Submission

  • Progress report of 1,500-2,000 words including:
    • Faculty template cover page (including generative AI acknowledgement)
    • Thesis table of contents
    • Contextualising statement or draft abstract
    • Response to previous panel comments and suggestions
    • Outline of thesis including detailed description of each part of the thesis
  • One complete draft section of thesis (8,000-10,000 words equivalent) demonstrating significant research: including notable portions of the creative research component and the exegesis.
  • Detailed timeline for completion for both the creative and research component
  • Supervisor confirmation of completion of first full draft of thesis or of significant progress towards completion of first full draft of thesis

Students must submit their written work to the panel at least one week prior to the presentation.
