Confirmation

The candidate is required to make a 20-minute oral presentation at a departmental seminar, with the review panel and members of the supervisory team in attendance. The oral presentation should explore the research undertaken to date and the anticipated future directions of the research project. For practice-based PhDs, candidates need to present and demonstrate their practice-based progress, for example in the form of prototypes or tests that demonstrate the validity of the approach.

The presentation will normally be followed by time for questions and feedback from members of the audience. Time should also be allowed for feedback from the panel in a closed session.

A written report of between 6,000 and 10,000 words needs to be submitted by the candidate at least 10 working days before the seminar for circulation to the review panel. A statement referring to the use of generative AI is required. For practice-based PhDs, the length of the report is reduced to 4,000-6,000 words.

Faculty specific guidelines for the written report and oral presentation can be found on the Faculty of IT Graduate Research Resource Hub.

Final Review

The candidate is required to give a 20-minute oral presentation and thesis summary at a final review seminar, with the review panel and members of the supervisory team in attendance.

The candidate is required to present a public seminar to a critical audience which includes a designated review panel. The seminar should provide a summary of the thesis structure and contributions to knowledge and describe, in greater detail, at least one element of the research. For practice-based PhDs, candidates need to present and demonstrate their practice-based work. Note that in cases where the exhibition or display of the final work is complex or site specific and seminar-based demonstration may not be possible, some form of documentation can be substituted. The aim is for the panel to understand and provide structured feedback on the practice-based research undertaken.

The presentation should normally be followed by time for open questions. Time for feedback should be provided by the review panel in a closed session.
