Navigating the Future: Key Clinical Trial Trends of 2023
Clinical trials play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare by providing evidence of the efficacy of drugs, medical devices, and treatment approaches. In 2023, Australia witnessed a notable shift in its clinical trials landscape, with a 13.9% decrease in registered trials compared to the previous year. Victoria emerged as a frontrunner, boasting 506 registered trials – the highest among all Australian states and territories.

Consumer-Centred Trials: A Key Priority
A notable trend in the industry was the prioritisation of consumer-centred trials. Recognising the importance of aligning trials with consumer needs, clinical trialists increasingly sought feedback from participants at every stage – from design to execution.2 This approach not only optimised consumer experiences but also demonstrated benefits in reducing patient recruitment times and increasing the likelihood of successful drug launches3.
Driving Trends and Innovations
Consumer-centred trials have spurred other industry trends, including enhanced diversity in recruitment, innovative trial designs, digital advancements, and the rise of precision healthcare2. Monash University Clinical Trials Centre (MUCTC) has been at the forefront of this movement, championing consumer-centred trials through innovative methods.
MUCTC's Impact: A Case Study
In 2020, Monash's STAREE trial exemplified MUCTC's commitment to consumer-centred trials. By implementing innovative decentralised trial methods, including virtual visits, home visits, and medication deliveries, STAREE reduced the burden on patients and increased access. The trial reached participants in remote areas, making it one of the largest community-based CVD primary prevention trials in Australia.
In summary, the clinical trials landscape in Australia is evolving, with consumer-centred approaches leading the way. MUCTC's dedication to innovation positions it as a trailblazer in the industry, fostering advancements that benefit researchers, companies, and, most importantly, patients globally.
