A clinical trial is research study that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more interventions to evaluate the effects on health-related outcomes.

Clinical trials are essential for determining if treatments (whether medicinal, surgical, devices, prognostic tests etc.) are safe and effective. They enable research teams to test and monitor the effect of any treatment in multiple people to ensure that any improvement or change is a result of the treatment and not just a random effect for one or a few people.

The Australian Clinical Trials Group and Consumers Health Forum of Australia have developed a ‘Consumer Guide to Clinical Trials’ to answer the most common questions asked by consumers.

Many clinical trials will recruit patients through their GP or specialist healthcare provider – we encourage you to speak to your GP or specialist for more information about any clinical trials relevant to your circumstances.

Our centre does not currently recruit or manage clinical trial participants.

Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR)

The ANZCTR is an online registry of clinical trials undertaken in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere.

ClinicalTrials.gov

ClinicalTrials.gov is a database of privately and publicly funded clinical studies conducted around the world.

MHTP Clinical Trials

The Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP) has proudly facilitated nearly 600 clinical trials.

Monash Central Clinical School

Central Clinical School (CCS) researchers run clinical trials or research studies for which both healthy and unwell participants are sought.

Monash School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine

The School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has an impressive track record of large-scale, international clinical trials that have advanced medical knowledge and research methodology.

At recruitment, you should have been provided with a letter or explanation statement that details who the lead researcher is for the trial along with their contact details, which organisation they are representing and which Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) have approved the research. The research lead is the best person to contact with any queries.
