MUARC Academy launched to advance education in injury prevention and safety science

This year, the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC)'s Education team has worked tirelessly to expand the scope and reach of capacity-building initiatives, and we are delighted to announce the establishment of MUARC Academy.

A key strength of MUARC courses is the focus on evidence-into-practice and applied learning models. Our new programs and reimagined existing offerings are designed and delivered by the Centre and draw upon best practices in adult education, focusing on innovation in course delivery methods.

They are tailored to empower professionals in the field of injury prevention and safety science and provide access to MUARC’s expansive academic knowledge and real-world experience through our internationally renowned teaching team and industry-leading experts.

MUARC launched the Academy at the 2024 Australasian Road Safety Conference in Hobart, Tasmania. It features professional development courses tailored to empower professionals in the field of injury and safety science. Our courses provide access to MUARC's expansive academic knowledge and real-world experience through its internationally renowned teaching and research team.

The Academy focuses on delivering high-quality education outcomes to support workforce development and transformational change in complex systems. Our teaching philosophy was developed in partnership with industry and government and blends principles from adult learning, social learning theory, and evidence-based practice. Specific learning techniques are tailored for every learner cohort and course design; and include elements of Transformative Learning and Diffusion of Innovations to support real change.

Importantly, all MUARC courses focus on building critical thinking skills to underpin long-term, sustainable change. These education and training experiences ensure that skills can be adapted and applied across different (and emerging) problems, innovations, and leadership challenges—well beyond the completion of the training program. We focus on how to generate learning into action and theory into practice through a combination of adult learning techniques relevant to complex safety domains.

Associate Director (Education) at MUARC, Associate Professor Carlyn Muir, said the announcement was an exciting step forward for MUARC.

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of MUARC Academy, which shows the progression in our commitment to advancing education in injury prevention and safety science.

"By emphasising practical, evidence-based learning and leveraging our internationally renowned teaching team, we are dedicated to ensuring that participants are fully prepared to tackle the challenges of road safety in the future." Associate Professor Muir said.
