Dr Carlyn Muir
Carlyn is Associate Director (Professional Education & Enterprise) and Senior Research Fellow at Monash University Accident Research Centre.
With qualifications in psychology and public health, and holding Senior Fellowship for the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Carlyn leads MUARC’s professional education portfolio, and is an experienced safety researcher.
Carlyn’s teaching responsibilities include course leader for the Graduate Certificate of Road Safety, unit co-ordinator for Using Data to Understand Family violence, which sits in the Family Violence Prevention Graduate Certificate in the Faculty of Arts. Carlyn is also responsible for developing a range of custom-designed professional development safety science courses for industry and government, and has also designed courses internationally, including a WHO course on Safe System and Police Enforcement for Road Safety in Pacific Island Countries.
Carlyn’s research portfolio covers a diverse range of injury and violence prevention topics. With experience in research and evaluation across the safety sciences, Carlyn has managed a number of large-scale projects and research collaborations with a focus on the prevention and management of injury among high risk groups. This involves the application of psychological and health theory to understand and influence behaviour within complex systems. Carlyn has long-standing research partnership with a range of emergency service agencies, and is currently working on research projects for agencies such as Victoria Police, Country Fire Authority, and New South Wales Rural Fire Service.
Carlyn also co-ordinates MUARC’s activities as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Violence and Injury Prevention, which focuses on research, advocacy and capacity building.
