Led by Associate Professor Carlyn Muir, the MUARC System Safety and Performance team covers a broad range of safety science topics at the intersection of human behavior, organisational design, and environmental dynamics, our research creates safer systems.

The team collaborates extensively with government, emergency services, and industry organisations to ensure their work addresses real-world challenges and delivers actionable strategies. Their work focuses on system-level factors by investigating the macro-level interactions, policies, and structures that shape safety outcomes across complex environments.

Interconnected research

Safety does not exist in a vacuum. A decision made by a first responder under extreme stress (Emotions, Cognitions and Human Performance) is directly influenced by organisational protocols (Emergency Services Research), which in turn relies on community preparedness (Disaster Resilience) and overall system design (System-Level Factors).

The same logic holds outside the emergency sector. How a rideshare or commercial passenger vehicle driver responds to various situations is shaped by policy and the regulatory settings that govern the industry.

By analysing these connections simultaneously, the team bridges the gap between individual human behaviour and structural system design. They work closely across these discipline boundaries to turn research insights into practical, system-wide improvements.
