Emergency Services Research

Led by Associate Professor Carlyn Muir, the MUARC Emergency Services Research team covers a broad range of safety science topics that focus on improving outcomes in complex safety-critical environments.

Research areas include occupational safety and wellbeing of emergency service workers, emergency vehicle safety, the role of emergency services in improving public health outcomes, road safety, and community safety.  They provide evidence to guide emergency service organisations towards the safest possible conditions for those who work in the field and community members who are affected.

Expertise

The team draws on research expertise in public health, psychology, criminology, paramedicine, and statistics, conducting world-class research to support the safety of emergency service workers and the communities they serve. Significant partnerships and long-term data linkage programs have been forged with a number of Australian state fire, ambulance and police agencies.

Research Portfolio

  • Fleet safety in the emergency services. Emergency service workers are at high risk of serious injury and/or death following a vehicle crash, our research in various emergency service organisations has used a range of research methods to examine  the factors influencing risk.
  • Occupational safety in the emergency services. First responders are regularly exposed to potentially traumatic events, our research examines the risk of physical and psychological injury.
  • Establishing linked datasets to examine worker and community injury, including the feasibility of establishing a national residential fire fatality dataset.
  • Creating safer workplaces for emergency service workers by conducting occupational injury studies, analysing injury claims over time, conducting mental health and wellbeing prevalence studies, and examining legislative interventions designed to support emergency service workers.
  • Examining community safety outcomes and conducting evaluations of community safety programs - including fire preparedness and prevention programs, behaviour change programs, and enforcement activities.
