Scholarships for international students

International students face unique challenges in beginning their research studies, which is why we offer a range of scholarships to make research at Monash more accessible.

Many international candidates will be eligible for a Monash Graduate Scholarship and other Monash scholarships, but we offer several awards specifically for them.

In all cases, you must meet the eligibility requirements to be considered for these awards.

Note: All International students are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover  (OSHC). Unless a student is awarded a scholarship which covers the cost of OSHC, this cover must be purchased by the student or their sponsor. Scholarship offer letters will clearly state if OSHC is covered by the scholarship.

It does not include an allowance for living expenses but could be awarded together with a stipend scholarship that covers such costs.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

Around 300 of these Australian-Government-funded scholarships are available Australia-wide each year for international students, with about 25 awards offered at Monash.

These scholarships pay your tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover. They don't include an allowance for basic living expenses but could be awarded together with a stipend scholarship that covers such costs.

Preference is given to students from the regions identified as priorities under the Australian Government's Endeavour Awards program.

Vera Moore International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (VMIPRS)

The Vera Moore International Postgraduate Research Scholarship is one of the most prestigious of our tuition awards.

It pays your tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and includes a research allowance but not an allowance for basic living expenses. However, it could be awarded together with a stipend scholarship for such expenses.

Victoria Latin America Doctoral Scholarship

This valuable scholarship allows you to work with top researchers and supervisors, use cutting-edge research infrastructure and facilities, and enjoy a welcoming lifestyle in a cosmopolitan community.

Four scholarships are available for PhD students from Latin America, commencing research at a Victorian University in 2016. These scholarships cover the cost of international tuition fees and award $90,000 to each student over the duration of their doctoral studies.

Applicants applying for scholarships in the main central scholarship round, who meet the eligibility criteria, will be consulted about being nominated.

Chile Bicentennial Scholarships

In July 2008, Universities Australia and the Government of the Republic of Chile established the 'Chile-Australia Agreement on Human Capital Development'. The agreement supports up to 500 fully funded Chilean PhD and Masters students each year to study in Australian universities.

Monash supports the initiative by offering students access to both master's and PhD programs.

The Chilean Ministry of Education's Spanish language website Conicyt has more information.

Monash University-China Scholarship Council

The China Scholarship Council and Monash University have established a collaborative scholarship program to attract high-quality Chinese students to undertake PhD studies with us.

A number of candidates each year will be awarded scholarships, which cover tuition fees, a living allowance for up to three years in the first instance, Overseas Student Health Cover, visa application fees and the cost of a return air fare between Australia and China.

Australian Government Endeavour Awards

The Endeavour Awards are the centrepiece of the Australian Government's internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program.

They provide opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia.

They also allow Australians to study abroad.

Applications for the awards are made directly to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and not through Monash University.
