Scheduling, Optimisation and Forecasting

Scheduling of railways is vital to safe and efficient operations. Monash University has expertise in system modelling and optimisation, allowing accurate simulations of whole operations or assets to be modelled and improved. With the expansion of autonomous train usage, a whole system picture is required to ensure that such operations are safe, and not deleterious to other assets. These capabilities also extend beyond the rail corridor, to measure and model passenger movements in and around stations, improving accessibility and customer experience.

Monash University also has expertise in government and business strategy and policy formation, delivering high level decision setting and delivery.

Areas include:

  • Station design and planning
  • Heavy and passenger rail logistics
  • Single line track scheduling and locomotive scheduling

  • Passenger rail demand forecasting
  • Passenger rail service design and development
  • Service disruption recovery modelling
  • Strategic passenger rail policy and strategy
  • Rail investment appraisal and evaluation
