Testing and Laboratory Capabilities

The Monash Institute of Railway Technology laboratory facilities have tested components for the Australian railways for over 40 years. Comprising a wide range of physical, materials and analytical techniques, Monash IRT offers a comprehensive and informed testing solution. Laboratory and site-based equipment includes:

  • Servo-hydraulic, dynamic testing machines with load capacity 10 – 70 tonnes
  • Fatigue testing of components including rail welds, rail joints, couplers, yokes, sleepers and fasteners
  • Strain gauge instrumentation
  • Metallic and polymer materials characterisation and failure analysis
  • Hardware-in-the-loop rail track simulation and measurement
  • Wheel load and force measurement systems
  • Wheel and rail profile measurement
  • Rail surface friction conditions
  • Rail corrugation measurements and analysis
  • LiDAR and optical based vision systems
  • Ballast and formation testing
