There are approximately 90 places available in the Direct Entry program for international students.
Yes. As long as you deferred or withdrew from your study before the first census date, and so did not incur any tuition fees, you are still eligible to apply for our direct entry medicine program.
No, you cannot transfer into the medicine course. Admission requires that students not have commenced tertiary study. Students currently studying a university degree who are interested in pursuing medical studies should view information about our Graduate Entry program instead.
To apply for direct entry Medicine, students are required to have completed their Year 12 no more than 2 years prior to course commencement. This timeframe is calculated from when the final examinations were taken, not when results were released. The only exception to this rule is for students who must complete compulsory national service immediately following their Year 12 studies.
Any such student must commence in the first available intake after their operationally ready date (ORD). To provide further clarity, the latest intake such an applicant may apply for is outlined below:
Students may also apply for an earlier intake and defer their commencement due to compulsory national service. Please note, it is strongly preferred that applicants wait until their last year of national service to apply.
Example 1
An applicant completes Year 12 in August 2024. They commence a two-year period of compulsory military service in January 2025 and are released from service in January 2027. The latest intake this applicant can apply for is Feb/Mar 2027 (the intake immediately following their release from compulsory military service). They would not be considered should they apply for any later intake.
Example 2
An applicant completes Year 12 in June 2025. They commence a two-year period of compulsory military service in October 2025 and are released from service in October 2027. The latest intake this applicant can apply for is Feb/Mar 2028 (the intake immediately following their release from compulsory military service). They would not be considered should they apply for any later intake.
Important Note on Supplementary Qualifications
The military service exemption applies only to application timing, not to when supplementary secondary study results can be obtained. All secondary qualifications (including SAT, A levels, etc.) must be completed in the same year or immediately following year of your original Year 12 completion to be considered for assessment. This policy maintains fairness among all applicants.
The only things that are considered as part of your application are your Year 12 (or equivalent) results, ISAT, and your interview performance. However, having volunteer or extracurricular experience may give you a broader perspective on challenges felt in communities served by health professions and so provide you with greater insight in an interview.
Interviews will be held online via Zoom only. Interview dates are provided on our website.
Applicants for this course are only allowed to attend the MMI once. Those who are re-applying for this course and have previously attended an interview for this course are not eligible to attend the interview again. Instead, the results from their previous interview will be used.
We do not endorse any external coaching for the MMI. There is no expectation of clinical knowledge, and there are no right or wrong answers. Instead, the interview is based on your thoughts and views of several different real world scenarios that you are presented with. As the interview is conducted online using Zoom, we do encourage students to practice, and build confidence, in presenting using this format.
Requests to defer will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Applicants should note that deferrals will not be allowed except under exceptional circumstances.
Note, compulsory national service qualifies as an exceptional circumstance.
If you expect to change residency status during the selection and admissions process, you should complete the UCAT ANZ (required for domestic applicants) in addition to the ISAT. For more information, please visit the UCAT ANZ website.
If your residency status changes during the application process, your application will be cancelled and you will need to re-apply as a domestic student.
Please note that Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) in the Medicine Program (M6011 & M6018) are capped by the Federal government. If a student changes their residency status to permanent residency after commencing the course, their fee category will change to domestic full fee paying. This fee category is only slightly less expensive than international student fees, and CSP places will not be made available.
However, as an Australian resident, you will be allocated a higher priority group in the PMCV intern match for Victoria. This means you are more likely to secure your preferred working location upon graduation if you are applying for an intern position in Victoria.
