Combination RSV prevention program analysis

Chair: Prof Nigel Crawford, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute

This project will look at how Australia’s RSV prevention program is working for pregnant women and newborn babies. It will ask families, healthcare workers and other experts about their experiences to learn what is working well and what could be improved.

Since 2025, pregnant women have been able to receive a free RSV vaccine during pregnancy. Some newborn babies can also receive an injection soon after birth to help protect them from RSV. This project will find out how many families are getting these injections and what are the factors that might be influencing what is received.

The project will use health information, surveys and interviews to understand how well the program is working. It will also look at whether families across Australia have fair access to RSV protection.

What the project learns will help improve RSV prevention programs and support families and babies for many years to come.
