Department of General Practice launches the Clinical guideline for the diagnosis and management of work-related mental health conditions in general practice

Applicable to all workers in Australia who present to a general practitioner, this guideline provides GPs with the best available evidence to guide the diagnosis and management of mental health conditions that have arisen as a result of work. Conditions include depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorders, acute stress disorder, adjustment disorders and substance misuse disorders.

The first guideline of its kind anywhere in the world, the key recommendations are based on clinical dilemmas identified by GPs, including:

• assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions
• determining the work relatedness of conditions
• patient management for recovery and return to work.

The guideline recommendations were approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in late 2018 and is endorsed by ACRRM and RACGP.
