Medical Elective Placements Alfred Care Group – Alfred Hospital (Bayside Health)

Undertaking a medical elective at Alfred Hospital offers the opportunity to observe and learn within the largest and most active trauma service in Australasia, alongside internationally recognised clinicians.

Elective placements are coordinated by the School of Translational Medicine – Medical Education Office (STM), which delivers the structured clinical teaching program across Alfred Hospital and affiliated health services.

Final-year medical student at time of elective
Minimum 12 months hospital-based clinical training
Placement length: 4 weeks minimum to 6 weeks maximum
Domestic: Australia or New Zealand medical school
International: Top 300 university for medicine + English requirements

1. Domestic students
  1. Be enrolled in a medical degree at an Australian or New Zealand university
  2. Be in your final year of study at the time of the placement
  3. Have completed a minimum of 12 months of hospital-based clinical training prior to the proposed elective period
  4. Meet Monash University’s English language proficiency requirements
2. International students
  1. Be enrolled at a university ranked within the top 300 for medicine in:

  4. Meet Monash University’s English language proficiency requirements

3. Photo for ID badge
  1. Upload a clear photo of yourself (head and shoulders). This photo:
    1. can be taken on a phone
    2. may be smiling
    3. will appear on your hospital ID badge
    4. will be shared with your clinical unit so staff can recognise you
    5. Do not upload a photo of your passport.
4. Identification
  1. Government-issued photo ID.

2. All applications are assessed by STM – Medical Education Admin.
3. You will only be contacted if a placement becomes available.
If your application is successful
1. Administration fee
  1. Once your placement is confirmed, you will be asked to pay an administration fee of AUD $990 via the Monash payment gateway.
    1. This fee is non-refundable
    2. This is the only elective fee charged
    3. Payment must not be made before you are instructed to do so
    4. Pre-payment does not secure a placement
2. Insurance. You must arrange:
  1. Professional indemnity / medical malpractice
  2. Public liability
  3. Personal accident insurance
  4. Minimum AUD $20,000,000 for the first two
3. Police checks
  1. All Students
    1. Australian National Police Check
  2. International students
    1. Home country police check (issued within 12 months)
4. TB screening – QuantiFERON Gold
  1. Provide a negative QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus result (usually within the last 12 months).
  2. Required after placement confirmation.
  3. This test is at the student’s expense.
5. N95 fit testing
  1. Must be completed before attending designated clinical areas. Options:
