Learning about investing in the stock market
Commencing in February 2025, our program deals with teaching individuals and households about investing in the stock market. The idea of the program is to provide knowledge and information on investing in stocks. There are no commercial interests for either the authors and for Monash University.
Research in various countries has shown us that many individuals and households do not have investments in the stock market.
What is a stock?
A stock – or, more formally, a share of common stock share of common stock – is a certificate that entitles the holder to a share in a company. When you buy a stock, you will earn a return when you sell it. That return can be either positive (if you sell for a higher price than you bought) or negative (if you sell for a lower price). Over a long term, stocks generally provide higher returns than savings accounts or bonds.
Learning about investing in the stock market
In order to give you an idea about the returns that you can earn in the stock market, we've developed a module to learn about the past performance of the Australian stock market.
At the start of this module, we ask you to give us your best predictions of stock returns for the next 10 years. We then walk you through the performance of the Australian market in the last 20 years. After having completed the module we would be grateful if you can answer the questions on the predictions again
The project is funded via a Monash Business School Impact Acceleration Grant.
