Psilocybin-assisted therapy for people living with opioid use disorder

Now recruiting participants

Investigators: Professor Adeel Razi, Professor Antonio Verdejo-Garcia, Professor Suzanne Nielsen & Professor Suresh Sundram

Opioid addiction remains a serious public health problem. Existing treatments have limitations, and many individuals relapse within a year of stopping opioid use. Emerging research indicates that psilocybin, the active compound found in magic mushrooms, may offer potential benefits in treating substance use disorders, including alcohol and nicotine addiction. This study will explore whether a single 30 mg dose of psilocybin - when given as part of psychedelic-assisted therapy - can assist people who are living with Opioid Use Disorder to reduce their use of non-prescribed opioids. The study will also use functional magnetic resonance imaging to observe any changes in participants’ brains. Other outcome measures include craving, impulsivity, memory, intelligence, mental health, and quality of life.
