GP Academic Post Registrars

Academic Posts at Monash University

Shape the future of General Practice through research and teaching

The Department of General Practice welcomes enquiries from eligible GP registrars interested in applying for an Academic Post.

An Academic Post at Monash offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in research and teaching within a world-class academic primary care department, located in Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital research precinct. Our registrars enjoy a varied week of supervised research, medical student teaching, and professional development, gaining fresh perspectives on general practice and exploring pathways toward leadership in academia and clinical care.

A proven launchpad for leadership

Many of our Academic Post registrars go on to build rewarding ‘portfolio’ careers after Fellowship, combining teaching or research with ongoing clinical work. Several have also been recognised nationally and locally for their leadership and contributions, including:

  • Dr Palllavi Prathivadi (National Registrar of the year)
  • Dr Karen Freilich (National Registrar of the year)
  • Dr Dan Epstein (Victorian Registrar of the year)

"Working as an Academic Post Registrar at Monash has been an incredibly valuable experience. Regular meetings and approachable supervisors have helped me grow and progress my research toward publication as first author. I’ve also gained confidence in medical education through teaching tutorials, providing feedback on assessments, and contributing to curriculum reviews. The friendly, team-oriented environment has made the year enjoyable and strengthened my interest in academic medicine.

– Dr Nat Lojanapiwat, 2025 Academic Post Registrar

"I had always imagined a career combining clinical practice, teaching, and research. The RACGP Academic Post provided an invaluable opportunity to trial this as a registrar, with excellent support in both research and teaching. At the Department of General Practice (DGP), I felt supported to extend my teaching and research skills through supervision by senior academic staff, as well as training opportunities during online modules and in-person workshops. It was wonderful sharing the experience with a national cohort of 20 registrars with diverse interests. The Academic Post at Monash also provided a great entry point to ongoing work – in 2023, I'm working as a Lecturer at DGP and continuing my research funded by the RACGP Family Medicare Care Education Research grant."
