From Monsoons to Media: Bringing climate economics to the public

Growing up across rural, small-town and metropolitan India gave Vinod Mishra first-hand exposure to the pressures rapid population growth and development place on infrastructure, resources, livelihoods and the environment – experiences that shape his commitment to sharing evidence-based commentary widely.

Practice

Vinod's research examines how farmers can manage unpredictable monsoon rainfall, crop failures and income shocks, and how firms can adapt to declining labour productivity from rising temperatures. Alongside this, he regularly engages with media in Australia and India, translating research into accessible commentary for policymakers, students, journalists, the public and the Indian diaspora.

Output

This engagement reaches diaspora audiences whose trade, investment, philanthropy and community initiatives contribute directly to India's sustainable development and to Australia–India partnerships.

Outcome and impact

Over time, this work broadens understanding of the economic consequences of climate change and the policy tools available for adaptation – supporting more informed strategies for farmers, firms and communities, and contributing to evidence-informed public debate and stronger resilience in India and other developing economies.
