Supervision workshops for health and human services workers

Program summary

As part of the ice action plan funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, MCSHE has been contracted to deliver workshops to enhance the supervision education of health and human services workers in Victoria. MCSHE has partnered with Monash Rural Health and Turning Point to develop, deliver and evaluate a high-quality state-wide supervision programme between 2017 and 2020. The training programme aims to enhance the supervision practice of professionals working in these contexts to better equip them in their supervision encounters.

Workshop details

Along with our partners, MCSHE will develop two half-day face-to-face workshops, one directed at foundational level (learner supervisees) and the second directed at an intermediate level (peer supervisees). While the content focuses on developing supervision skills, examples will be contextualised with ice-related content. For example, the workshops will include discussions around staff burnout and organisational issues such as safe workplace cultures, which are pertinent to health and human services professionals working with ice-affected clients.

Foundational Level (learners) Workshop

This workshop aims to help supervisors of learners (students) to develop supervisory knowledge, skills, attitudes and practices. Using both plenary and group activities, we expect you to leave the workshop with a better understanding of what supervision of learners means and the different models of learner supervision. You will discuss effective supervision and its outcomes, alongside barriers and enablers to effective supervision of learners. You will also explore ways to evaluate supervision of learners in your own health or human services contexts. The focus of the foundational level workshop will be on the formative (educational) functions of supervision and will cover the principles of experiential learning, reflective practice and feedback. We also draw on examples of supervising learners interacting with clients under challenging circumstances such as those affected by methamphetamine.

Intermediate Level (peers and colleagues) Workshop

This workshop aims to help supervisors of peers and colleagues to develop their supervisory knowledge, skills, attitudes and practices. Using both plenary and group activities, we expect you to leave the workshop with a better understanding of what supervision of peers and colleagues means and the different models of peer/colleague supervision. You will discuss effective supervision and its outcomes, alongside barriers and enablers to effective supervision of peers/colleagues. You will also explore ways to evaluate supervision of learners in your own health or human services contexts. The focus of the intermediate level workshop will be on the restorative (supportive) functions of supervision and will cover the principles of self-care, supervisors supporting supervisees, and supportive workplace cultures. We also draw on examples of supervising peers/colleagues interacting with clients under challenging circumstances such as those affected by methamphetamine.
