Leaning into Leadership

Monash Rural Health’s North West Victoria Regional Training Hub is pleased to offer an inaugural short course in leadership - Leaning into Leadership.

This introductory short course on leadership will empower participants to see themselves as leaders and develop their leadership skills. A practical and interactive program, Leaning into Leadership requires participants to reflect on their approach to leadership and challenges them to develop their current skills and adopt new ways of leading in their workplace.

Delivered by Professor Frank Bowden, who has extensive practical leadership experience in clinical, academic and administrative roles in health, this program will help you think about taking the next steps in your professional career and development.

As a participant, you will receive:

An understanding of how to do leadership well in the rural medical context, and strategically position yourself toward leadership opportunities.
Ongoing networking opportunities and support
A certification of participation.

This short course is designed for medical graduates at any stage of their career who wish to learn more about the principles and practice of leadership in a medical context. To participate, you must live and work in the Loddon Mallee region. Up to 20 sponsored places are available, and selection will be merit-based.

Program costs are covered by the Monash Rural Health North West Victoria Regional Training Hub, and supported by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care's Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program.

Dates

● Saturday 20 April, 8.30am -1.30pm: Workshop (lunch included), Bendigo

● Thursday 21 November, 6.30-9.30pm: Leadership Program valedictory dinner, Bendigo

● Three 20-minute online/face-to-face mentoring sessions between April and November

Program

Workshop

The program begins with a half-day, face-to-face workshop in Bendigo.

The outline below is a guide and may change slightly depending on the group's needs and skill level.

Session 1 8.30-10am	Welcome, Acknowledgement of Country, Getting to know the group members and establishing what we’re aiming to achieve. A general introduction to leadership Understanding Self-Leadership Introduction to Leadership Defining leadership and its importance in professional development. Self-Reflection and Awareness Assessing personal strengths, weaknesses, and leadership style. Goal-setting for personal and professional growth. Working with Others Empathetic Leadership Understanding and practicing empathy in leadership. Building strong interpersonal relationships. Motivational Leadership Techniques to inspire and motivate team members. Understanding individual and team motivations. Effective Communication Building strong communication skills for clear and inspiring messages. Active listening and feedback strategies.
Session 2 10-11am	Leadership in a medical context – the clinician, the academic, the administrator 15 minute break
Session 3 11.15am-12.15pm	Interactive session on practical leadership – what works, what doesn’t
Session 4 12.15-1.30pm	Lunchtime medical leadership forum – experienced local medical leaders discuss their approaches to leadership with examples of their successes (and failures!) Topics covered by the panel will include: Working in a system : Fostering Innovation Encouraging Innovation Creating a culture that values creativity and innovation. Practical tools for generating and implementing new ideas. Strategic Thinking Developing a strategic mindset for effective decision-making. Problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Optimizing Workflows Streamlining processes for efficiency and productivity. Project management essentials. Personal Development and Continuous Learning Continuous Learning Importance of ongoing professional development. Identifying learning opportunities and resources. Building a Leadership Support Network Networking and mentorship for leadership growth. Peer learning and collaboration.

Participants are to select an aspect of the course content that has resonated with them and further reflect on this in their own context. You will have the opportunity to attend three mentoring sessions with Professor Frank Bowden for discussion between the initial teaching date and the valedictory dinner.
Self-reflection is encouraged. Learn to check in and ask yourself the hard questions. Learn about your behaviour and the world you operate in, understand how systems work and see opportunities to make an impact. Navigate a path and stay true to your style as you grow and create positive change as a leader.
Participants have a valedictory dinner with invited regional stakeholders at the close of the program.
Each participant will deliver a reflective presentation showcasing innovation and excellence (5 minutes to present followed by 2 minutes for audience Q&A). The presentations must be accompanied by slides and based on practising leadership in medicine in a rural or regional setting.
The program participants will be networked to create a peer group. Relationships need to be nourished to thrive, and your connections can define your leadership, we hope this program establishes strong connections that the group chooses to maintain.
