Associate Professor Sjaan Koppel wins 2024 ACRS Women in Road Safety Award
In a celebration of excellence in road safety advocacy, Associate Professor Sjaan Koppel has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Australasian College of Road Safety Women in Road Safety Award.
This accolade recognises her outstanding commitment and contributions to reducing road trauma, highlighting the vital role women play in this critical field.
Established in 2022, the Women in Road Safety Award aims to honour individuals who demonstrate exemplary leadership and effectiveness in promoting road safety. With a focus on advocacy, mentorship, and innovative solutions, the award shines a light on those who are making significant strides in the fight against road trauma.
Associate Professor Koppel's selection comes after a rigorous nomination process, where she stood out among many deserving candidates. Her dedication to advancing road safety practices and policies has made a profound impact in the community.
As an Executive Committee member of the ACRS, and President-Elect of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM), she exemplifies the qualities sought by the award: active involvement, leadership, and a clear commitment to the field of road safety.
In her acceptance speech at the Australasian Road Safety Conference on Wednesday , Associate Professor Koppel highlighted the significance of this year’s ARSC theme, Target 2030: What's the Pathway Forward?, calling it “a powerful call to action, emphasising the urgent work needed to reduce road trauma.” She added, “This award acknowledges that women will be pivotal in shaping that work. It is essential that our voices are heard, our expertise valued, and our contributions recognised. Receiving this award is a tremendous honour, but it is also a recognition of the collective efforts of all women in road safety.”
