MUARC announces 2025 Annual Award and Seeding Grant recipients

MUARC recently held its end-of-year event, where the Institute celebrated the achievements of its researchers and students by presenting the prestigious Peter Vulcan Best Paper Awards, inaugural Professional Staff Excellence Award and announcing the recipients of a MUARC Seeding Grant.

Peter Vulcan Best Paper Awards

Named in honour of Professor Peter Vulcan AM, the Founding Director of MUARC, the Peter Vulcan Best Paper Awards recognise outstanding research published during the year. Peter Vulcan has been an instrumental supporter of MUARC since its inception in 1987, and we were pleased to have him attend the ceremony to join our current Director, Professor Stuart Newstead, to present these coveted awards.

2025 Peter Vulcan Best Paper Award - Researcher

The 2025 Peter Vulcan Best Paper Award for a researcher was awarded to Dr Amanda Stephens for her paper, Multigroup invariance of measure for angry drivers (MAD) scale using a representative sample of drivers in Australia, published in the Journal of Safety Research.

2025 Peter Vulcan Best Paper Award - Student

Christine Mulvihill received the 2025 Peter Vulcan Best Paper Award for a student for her paper, To what extent has a systems thinking approach been applied to understand motor vehicle crashes involving ambulances? A systematic review of risk factors and characteristics, published in Safety Science.

2025 MUARC Professional Staff Excellence Award

The inaugural Professional Staff Excellence Award was awarded to Peggy Hum-Teo, Senior Research and Finance Coordinator, for exceptional patience, support, and guidance in helping colleagues navigate MUARC’s research systems and processes with confidence.

MUARC Seeding Grant

This grant is designed to support academics to develop high-quality applications to nationally and internationally competitive granting schemes. Dr Amanda Stephens received the seeding grant for her project, "Emotion in the Loop: Awareness, Trust, and Safety in Shared Mobility".
