Acute medical conditions contributing to road transport injury and falls in the home

In hospitalised injury patients, comorbidity and in particular chronic disease are common; however, the role of acute onset medical conditions in unintentional injury incidence has not been fully elucidated. A better understanding of injury secondary to acute onset medical conditions will help to inform injury prevention, particularly secondary prevention that can be provided in clinical settings. This research will utilise coroners’ reports and hospital admission records to provide insight into the role of acute medical conditions such as stroke, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and epilepsy in the incidence of road transport and home falls injury. The project aims are to determine demographic and clinical risk factors as well as injury outcomes. Data linkage studies utilising police reports (for transport injury crash details), hospital and fatality data from Victoria, Australia will provide further insights into patient- and setting related risk factors.
