Plan

Planning your content in advance makes it easier to edit and/or reduces the need for editing, which produces a more cohesive and professional result.

Planning your content also helps you estimate how long it will take to record the podcast, so you can arrange a suitable recording venue if needed and let your guests and cohosts (if relevant) know how long they will need to be there for.

Storyboarding your content

A storyboard is a useful tool for planning the content and audio elements of your podcast, as well as deciding the rough length of each sequence to ensure you stay within the overall required length.

To plan the structure for your storyboard (and therefore the structure for your podcast) decide on what kind of ‘segments’ you want to have in your podcast, and what format of podcast you are making in relation to the host(s) and other cast.

Note

While you are storyboarding your content, keep track of the academic sources and media sources that you use, so that you can include them as references and credits in your podcast notes.

Planning music for your podcast

Music can make a great addition to your podcast, because it is very effective for creating an emotional connection with your listeners and indicating transitions between sections of content.

Unless you are recording your own music, you will need to use music created by someone else.

General planning strategies

  • Use a clear and logical structure for your content. Most audio-based assessments require an introduction, body, and conclusion, just like a written assessment.
  • Explicit signposting is also extremely important to ensure your viewers understand the relationships between concepts and can follow your structure. Your listeners do not have any visual cues, so clear signposting will help them follow what is going on and understand how the different pieces of content make sense together.
  • Before and after writing your plan, check your assessed task instructions and marking criteria to ensure you cover all the necessary content.

Note

Creativity is encouraged in podcast assessments, so be creative when planning your content, but always double-check your marking criteria to make sure you are not going off-topic.
