Echo360 is an online platform that enables you to view live streams of lectures and other classes at Monash. You can also use it to access previous lecture recordings, view and download slides if attached, or download recordings to watch the videos offline. Echo360 is not used by all units at Monash. However, if your unit does use Echo360 it will be integrated with Moodle.
 | 1. Prepare and setup before the stream Check your Moodle site ahead of time and make sure you know how to access the streaming session before it goes live. Also ensure you complete any pre-class work that is required. A few minutes before the live stream is scheduled to start, check your audio, and set up in a location that is conducive to study. |
 | 2. Engage during the stream Use the discussion/questions panel to ask questions and take part in any polls that give you the chance to interact during the session. Make notes just as you would during an in-person session; including creating action items for yourself of points to follow-up on afterward, or things that you will need to do regarding your assessed tasks and weekly learning activities. |
 | 3. Consolidate and revise after the stream Access the recording (if available) to rewatch any sections you may have missed or that you wish to return to for clarification. Then post any follow-up questions you have in your unit forums on Moodle, and conduct additional research or complete post-class tasks as required. Review your notes, and make sure you add the answers to any questions you asked, so that you have access to both the questions and answers for future reference. |
Each Moodle site can be set up differently, and not all units use live streaming, so explore the site to locate your class links and learning materials, and if you are not sure, ask in the forums.
In Echo360 the live class appears with a LIVE badge next to the class name. If the class is happening now, the LIVE badge is green and there is a green dot to the left of the class name.
The classroom toolbar appears across the top of the screen, allowing you to:

Occasionally Echo360 will experience lag during live streams and the two screens will become out of sync.
To re-sync both screens, click the skip button on the bottom-left of the screen.
For live streaming classes, the Questions panel appears by default.
NoteThe Q&A feature is primarily used while the session is live. If you are viewing a pre-recorded session, you can still use the Q&A to ask questions, however your lecturer may not respond promptly to them. It is recommended that you post your questions to your Moodle unit forum instead. |
While Echo360 is primarily used for live streaming at Monash University, it can also be used to re-watch streamed content for revision purposes, or to catch up on content that you were unable to watch live.
Echo360 is accessed via a link in Moodle, which you can identify by the Echo360 logo. The name of the link may vary across your units. Each Moodle site can be set up differently, and not all units use Echo360, so explore the site to locate your class links and learning materials, and if you are not sure, ask in the forums.
After clicking on the Echo360 link, you will be able to access the recording for each class, as well as the presentation slides if available.
If Echo360 is unavailable in your location, you will be able to access recordings in Panopto. Recordings will be copied to Panopto within 24 hours of the lecture time. See the Panopto tab for details on how to use the Panopto players.
The Echo360 player includes playback options and the ability to make notes and flag sections of the video while watching.
Click on the information points below to read about each of the Echo360 player features and how to use them. Note that some features will only be available if enabled. For example, not all videos will have captions.
Echo360 also has a mobile application which can be used for watching class recordings. It does not support live streaming. The mobile app is available on Android, iOS, Windows, and Amazon Kindle devices, and can be downloaded here.
Due to the smaller screen size of mobile devices, and reduced functionality of the mobile app, it is recommended to use the Echo360 player in your browser instead if possible. However, the mobile app can be convenient if you like to use multiple devices in your study setup (for example, to view the recording on your tablet, while typing notes on your laptop), or if you do not have access to a larger device.
To access recordings in the Echo360 mobile app, you will need to create an account using your Monash University email address. You will also need to click each Echo360 link from each Moodle unit in order to connect your participation and engagement in the app to Moodle. If your internet speed is slow, or you have intermittent internet access while trying to watch a video, you can adjust the playback quality in the player settings.
If your video loading time does not improve after adjusting the quality, or the quality is not high enough for your needs, consider downloading the video. See the downloads FAQ item below for instructions.
The ability to download depends on the video sharing settings.
If the person who uploaded the video has made it available for download, you can do so by following the instructions below.

Recordings may not be available until one to two hours after the lecture, depending on processing time.
During particularly busy times or due to technical difficulties, it can sometimes take up to a day for recordings to be available. If you still cannot access a recording after one day, contact your unit coordinator to report the issue.
Lecture recordings are usually available throughout the semester and exam period, including deferred exams. You should check with your unit coordinator if your recordings are no longer available.
If you are having trouble accessing your recorded lectures in Moodle, it could be for one of the following reasons:
The unit coordinator determines the order of the recordings in the settings. However, you can temporarily change the list order.
In the Echo360 class list, click on the Sort by drop-down menu to select either newest or oldest, depending on your preference.
Sometimes when you hit play on a class recording, all you will see is a blank screen or an empty Monash desktop screen. There are two possibilities in this case.
If captions are available for a particular video you can enable them by clicking on the CC button.
If the CC button is greyed-out and not clickable, this means that captions are not available for the video.

If captions are enabled, you can click on the CC button to bring up a menu of Closed Caption options.
