Do these questions sound familiar from patients?
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics here at Monash University have developed a flexible online course to help suit the learning needs of busy health professionals. This course aims to provide information to answer those common food and nutrition related questions that you might get in practice regarding fertility and pregnancy.
What is the role of food and nutrition in fertility and pregnancy?
This flexible two week online course focuses on the current evidence surrounding the role of nutrition, and the foods we eat, on fertility and pregnancy outcomes. Presenting the latest evidence on nutrition, we will focus on two main topics; Foods and Fertility, and Foods and Pregnancy.
Foods and Fertility will focus on optimising nutrition for fertility and pre-conception. Areas to be explored include the effect of food on reproductive function and health, dietary recommendations to improve ovulation and fertility, the importance of weight management, and what to consider when putting nutrition recommendations into practice including communication skills.
Foods and Pregnancy will explore include nutrient metabolism and requirements during pregnancy, food recommendations and optimising gestational weight gain, and what to consider when putting nutrition recommendations into practice.
- Describe the role of nutrition for optimising fertility outcomes, pre-conception health and nutrition during pregnancy.
- Provide evidence-based dietary recommendations to women in order to improve ovulation, fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
- Generate a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to managing women prior to, and during pregnancy.
Learn from a team of nutrition experts
This course has been designed by a team of experts in food and nutrition, fertility and pregnancy from Monash University. As researchers and clinical health practitioners, they apply the latest research to practical patient care.
General Practitioners and nurses have had input into the content of this course to ensure that it is relevant and useful to healthcare professionals and their practice.

- Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP): this activity has been approved/allocated 40 Category 1 points by the RACGP QI&CPD Program in the 2017 – 19 triennium.
- Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF): this online educational activity is endorsed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) Federal Office. Completion attracts 8 CPD hours
- Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA): this activity has been endorsed by APNA according to approved quality standards criteria. Completion of this educational activity entitles eligible participants to claim 6 CPD hours.

This course is designed for healthcare professionals, specifically medical specialists, general practitioners, nurses and nutrition professionals who would like a refresher in this space. It assumes knowledge of science, medicine and healthcare practice.
