From examining the premature deaths of aged care residents to the inappropriate prescribing of drugs, research arising from our Forensic Medicine Division has been contributing to public health policies and evidence-based practices for more than two decades.

The Department of Forensic Medicine – a strategic partnership between Monash University and The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) – seeks to educate and inspire the next generation of forensic scientists and practitioners. The two organisations work seamlessly together, creating a cycle whereby research and practice advance each other.

We’re also a world leading teaching institution with state-of-the-art facilities, offering an unparalleled opportunity to study forensic medicine and science in a fully operational forensic medical environment.

Established in the late 1980s, the Department of Forensic Medicine has made major contributions to the international fields of forensic medicine, science and law with more than 1,000 publications.

Our current areas of interest are represented in our Research groups below.
