Rich experiences
Many of our students take up opportunities to immerse themselves in real-world learning experiences, that help embed knowledge, build networks, and ignite different perspectives and interests.
Take a look at some of the activities you could engage in, and hear about the experiences of past students.
Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)
This interactive learning opportunity is a fantastic way for our undergraduate and postgraduate students to engage with foreign peers, build cultural competency and learn about adjacent health professions, all from the comfort of your home.
You’ll join health and medical students from Italy, Malawi and Malaysia in a month-long series of virtual classrooms, during which you’ll expand your professional and cultural knowledge, and work together to treat an AI-derived patient.

Outbreak simulation
Using Monash’s bespoke AI solutions, our Health Sciences and Public Health students embark on an interactive outbreak simulation. Over four weeks, you’ll team up to try to curb the outbreak.
Based on daily case updates, you’ll develop prevention strategies, share those with the community, manage community responses, and analyse and report on your results.
In a realistic social media environment driven by AI bots – complete with community members, politicised media outlets, and influencers – you’ll share your strategies, and respond to community sentiment.
You’ll also take on the role of public health officer, leading an investigative case interview with an AI simulated patient.
Interaction with real-world experts in epidemiological modelling, contact tracing, health communication and infectious disease management timed at critical junctures, will equip you with the skills and knowledge to assist in future outbreaks.
Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG)
Bachelor of Health Sciences students are eligible to undertake a fully funded international fieldwork unit in a neighbouring country, focused on human impact on the environment.
It’s an incredible opportunity to learn about a complex challenge impacting communities around the world, and hear from local leaders about balancing environmental protection and sustainability with economic and social development – and discover how you can contribute and make a difference.

Research and industry placements
We offer professional experience placements for a range of Monash health and medical students.
Undergraduate students
Bachelor of Health Sciences and Bachelor of Public Health students may elect to work with a healthcare-adjacent organisation to deliver a small but meaningful real-world project. Previous placements have taken place at Inspiro, EnLiven, Peninsula Health, and Gender Equity Victoria, just to name a few.
Conducted under close supervision, it’s a supported and fun introduction to professional life, giving you a range of invaluable job-readiness skills and opportunities to start building your job network.

Yehyung Lee
Bachelor of Public Health student Yehyung Lee completed a placement with Belgravia Leisure in 2024.
Postgraduate students
Master of Public Health students have the option of a workplace practicum unit that’ll help you manage and develop your career. It’s an important way to apply new knowledge in a workplace, give you exposure to public health organisational communication and culture, and create employment opportunities. Students can choose from a range of employer settings, and focus on a research project or work-based skills.

Monash Medical Students
We’re a major hub of Scholarly Intensive Placements (SIP) for final year medical students. These projects provide medical students with the chance to test the waters of research through a real-life project or data analysis, many of which go on to publication.
