Dr Chris Pang

[This course] strengthened my ability to critically analyse clinical literature and develop study designs, and enhanced my approach to identifying, quantifying and managing occupational hazards. So, it not only bolstered my ability to conduct research, but also to be a better clinical practitioner in this field.

Dr Chris Pang graduated from our Master of Occupational and Environmental Health course in 2017. In the intervening years, he’s applied his learnings to deepen his medical practice through prevention and treatment of workplace related injuries.

After completing his course, he put his new knowledge and skills to the test in a collaborative study, which culminated in a publication of a systematic review and meta-analysis that demonstrated the lack of association between occupational asbestos exposure and the risk of developing renal cancer.

“The course prepared me for that experience. It strengthened my ability to critically analyse clinical literature and develop study designs, and enhanced my approach to identifying, quantifying and managing occupational hazards. So, it not only bolstered my ability to conduct research, but also to be a better clinical practitioner in this field.”

As an Occupational and Environmental physician, Dr Pang’s role includes providing occupational health consultancy services to a variety of organisations, and performing medicolegal assessments. Staying up-to-date with medical literature is vital, as it helps him to recommend evidence-based treatment modalities for injured workers, or to assess whether an injury or illness is work-related.

He has also pursued research after graduation, serving as a clinical opinion leader on a study called Implementing work-related Mental health guidelines in general practice (IMPRovE). This saw him provide academic detailing to general practitioners regarding utilising evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and management of work-related mental-health conditions.

“I’ve really enjoyed expanding into this medical specialty. I find it truly rewarding to help improve the health and wellbeing of workers, in part through treatment, but also through injury prevention. The ability to employ risk assessment and risk management strategies in various workplaces means I can help people avoid work-related injury, which is arguably more important in the long run.”
