I love the idea of contributing to a field where my work really feeds back to the community. The skills I learnt allow me to do that.

Rohini Chandra finished her Bachelor of Public Health in 2021, and has hit the ground running with a year-long placement in the Victorian Government’s Graduate Program. She’s learning the ropes around policy with the Department of Land, Environment, Water and Planning.

“One of the great things about a degree in public health is the career flexibility. Public health is intrinsic to so many facets of life - here I am, able to apply my learnings to environmental planning and policy projects,” she says.

Rohini didn’t always know public health was what she wanted to do. It was a chance discovery at the end of high school that led her to apply, and it’s a choice she’s not regretting.

“I love the idea of contributing to a field where my work really feeds back to the community. The skills I learnt allow me to do that. One of the best things about my studies was a 12-week placement I undertook with LiverWELL. They helped me conduct a small research project on increasing consumer engagement, and are currently implementing the recommendations I made in the report. It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Rohini’s favourite subject was epidemiology, which she found unexpectedly fascinating, and incredibly relevant as the COVID-19 pandemic rolled out around her.

“There were about 30 students in all, so it was a really intimate, tight group, which was very supportive. And I’m so grateful to my tutors, and the administrative staff, who were always forthcoming with opportunities for us to engage with the sector outside of our formal learning. It’s been an invaluable experience.”
