Truc Phi Bui, known to friends as Henry, is an international student from Vietnam who has been living in Melbourne for over five years. He is currently in his second year of a Bachelor of Health Sciences at Monash University, with aspirations to pursue a Master of Nursing Practice as a postgraduate degree. Henry is a full-time student dedicated to exploring new knowledge and skills during his free time. He is keen on learning new languages and enhancing his soft skills, such as confidence in communication, public speaking, and time management, through extra classes at the university and self-study online.
Henry is actively involved in various university clubs and societies, where he voluntarily contributes his photography and videography skills. He holds roles such as Media Officer for the Monash Health Sciences Society, Media Freelance for the Vietnamese International Student Club, Peer Mentor for the Allied Health and Nursing and Midwifery departments, and Domestic Student Recruitment Ambassador for 2024. Additionally, he volunteers with MONSU and MSA.
Monash University was Henry's dream university since high school, where he excelled in math and science subjects. From an early age, he was determined to study at Monash, drawn by the University’s diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and public health, as well as the promising career opportunities it offers. His sense of belonging to Monash has only grown stronger over time.
The Bachelor of Health Sciences degree provides Henry with a broad understanding of medicine, science, and social factors. This education enables him to explain the causes, effects, consequences, and prevention of diseases, as well as consider various determinants of health. He sees himself as a mediator between patients and health professionals, utilising his knowledge to find optimal solutions for both individuals and the broader community. His coursework has helped him develop professional skills and confidence through research, writing, presentations, and networking.
Looking forward, Henry plans to pursue a Master of Nursing Practice at Monash. He understands that becoming a professional nurse requires extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, as well as excellent communication and empathy skills. Henry is committed to continuous learning and practice to achieve his career goals.
He values the opportunities to learn from health professionals and enhance his networking skills. The most rewarding aspect of his degree is its flexibility, allowing him to find a career path that aligns with his passions in the health sector. He appreciates the numerous networking opportunities that contribute to his career development.
The most useful and important lessons Henry has learned from his studies include the practical application of health knowledge in everyday life and the recognition of current and future health challenges faced by the community. His advice for future students thinking about studying the Bachelor of Health Sciences at Monash is to be prepared for self-study, time management, and critical thinking required for success. He encourages them to take advantage of the high-quality education, networking opportunities, and supportive environment Monash University offers.
