Melbourne: Australia’s most student-friendly city

In 2023 the QS Rankings put Melbourne as the 5th most student-friendly city in the world, and the best in Australia. We think they know what they’re talking about!

Melbourne is an easy city to get around, with lots of public transport options. Blessed with a temperate climate, we’re located on the banks of the Yarra River, where it flows into the sea, providing beaches and riverside entertainment.

The city is known for its vibrant culture, across dining and drinking, the arts, and sports. We’re a short drive away from wine-growing regions and ski fields.

Melbourne is diverse and cosmopolitan. It’s a wonderful place to live and study. Finding things to do and see while you are here won’t be hard. The trick will be remembering to find time to study.

553 St Kilda RoadPrahran: our home for postgraduate students

The main thing to know is that you won’t be based in Clayton! If you’re a postgraduate student with us, most face-to-face classes or meetings you’ll have will be at 553 St Kilda Road, where we are co-located with the Alfred Hospital.

Forensic Medicine students may have classes at Southbank, a couple of kilometres from Prahran, nearer the city.

You’ll need to remember that when you’re choosing accommodation.

Prahran is a relatively quiet suburb on the St Kilda Road corridor, a long strip of residential and office blocks connecting the city with the inner southern suburbs. We’re just five kilometres from the city centre, which is easily accessible by fast and frequent public transport, or an easy cycle along protected bike paths.

The suburb is home to great shopping and dining outlets on Chapel Street, a quintessentially Australian outdoor heated public swimming pool (perfect for cooling off on hot Melbourne days), and is within easy reach of Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

Prahran has plenty of lovely old houses and medium-density apartment blocks. The accessibility of Melbourne’s city by public transport may also make it a good option for you to live, if you enjoy apartment life. A couple of kilometres south lie the beachside suburbs of St Kilda, Elwood and Elsternwick. All three have many low-rise apartment blocks, and offer a range of dining and shopping and entertainment.
