Organic Reactions and Synthesis Pathways

Organic reactions are chemical processes that involve changes in organic compounds, typically involving the breaking and forming of chemical bonds. Click the cards below to explore different types of organic reactions.

  • Substitution

Substitution reactions involve the replacement of one atom or group in a molecule with another.

  • Addition

Addition reactions involve two or more reactants combining to form a single product.

  • Oxidation

Organic oxidation reactions include the creation of aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids from alcohols.

  • Condensation

Condensation reactions combine two molecules to form a larger molecule, releasing water as a byproduct.

  • Hydrolysis

Hydrolysis reactions break down larger molecules into smaller components by the addition of water.

  • Esterification & Transesterification

Esterification reactions are a fundamental organic reaction of alcohol and  carboxylic acid. Transesterification reactions involve the conversion of fats and oils into biodiesel.
