Using the notes feature for critical thinking

The notes feature in NotebookLM can be used to deepen your understanding of concepts and help you explore materials in more detail. There are two ways to generate notes in NotebookLM.

  1. Save a response as a note
After NotebookLM generates a response, you’ll have the option to select “Save to note.” This will instantly create a note based on that response.
  2. Write your own note
If you prefer to create a note manually, select the “Add note” button and type your own content.

Both methods will place your note under the Studio tab, where it will appear alongside other outputs such as reports, quizzes, flashcards, and more.

If you want NotebookLM to use your note as part of its reasoning, you’ll need to convert it into a source. To do this, click the three dots on the note and choose “Convert to source.” The note will then move to the Sources tab and become available for NotebookLM to analyse and reference.

Why Convert Notes to Sources?

By generating notes and adding them to your sources, you can build an ongoing dialogue with NotebookLM. This allows you to:

  • clarify your thinking
  • build and refine insights
  • layer new ideas on top of your own interpretations
  • engage in deeper, iterative critical thinking.

This process creates a cycle where you generate insights → reflect on them → use NotebookLM to extend or challenge them → and continue developing your understanding.
