Application of field concepts

This resource covers the application of field concepts including gravitational, magnetic and electric fields. It looks at satellite motion, modelled as circular motion, the operation of simple DC motors and particle accelerators.

This resource revises application of field concepts and within application of field concepts there are 4 key concepts:

To determine if this resource will benefit you, start by answering the following questions.

  • Can you describe how a DC motor operates?
  • Can you determine the size and direction of forces acting on a coil within a motor?
  • Can you determine orbital characteristics of satellites, both when given information about the satellite mass and the central body, or information about two satellites orbiting around a central body?
  • Can you describe and explain how electric and magnetic fields are used to control the motion of particles in a particle accelerator?

The answers to these questions are provided on the following pages. Use this resource to refresh your memory, reinforce your understanding of these concepts, and prepare more effectively for university-level learning.
