What is live streaming used for at Monash?
Live streaming of audio and video content is used at Monash for a variety of learning experiences, most commonly for online lectures. It may be used for sessions that are entirely online, or for situations in which some students are attending in-person and others are attending online.
At Monash, your online classes may be broadcast as live streams using Echo360 or they may be held as video conference meetings using Zoom. Live streaming and video conferencing are similar, but there are important differences.
- Live streaming is typically more presenter-led, and participants tend to have limited opportunities for interaction. Live streams at Monash can be directly broadcast from select onsite teaching spaces.
- Video conferencing typically involves more interaction between participants, and can include group discussions. See our resource about Zoom for more information on engaging in learning opportunities through video conferencing.
How to get the most out of live streams

Recording classes
Classes at Monash, whether online or face to face, may be recorded at times. All seminars and lectures are recorded and some other select activities as determined by individual faculties. It is important to understand that there are certain policies in place regarding recording classes at Monash that students should be aware of.
Rules for recording classes:
- Class recordings are made available for you for the purpose of revision. They are not recorded as a replacement teaching activity that is scheduled.
- Your tutor will let you know when recording is taking place in your unit.
- Your consent to record teaching activities is not required. Where there is sensitive information being communicated, you'll be asked to consent to recording
- When online or hybrid classes are being recorded, camera use is optional.
