AHT2882/3882 Contemporary Asian art and exhibitions
Summer Semester A 2023 study intensive
Indonesia and Singapore

Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions, In Context, is a two-week Art History study tour undertaken in Indonesia and Singapore. This guided tour provides you with an opportunity to extend your learning by engaging directly with contemporary Asian art and exhibitions in their Asian contexts, with a focus on Indonesia and Singapore. You’ll also be introduced to the larger field of contemporary Southeast Asian art and its history.

Over the course of the two weeks, you'll encounter significant artworks first hand, including in a range of major museums and galleries as well as independent art spaces, and you’ll hear directly from leading art experts such as local artists, curators and art historians. Beginning with a two-day introduction to Singapore’s contemporary art history, as well as Southeast Asian art exhibitions and collections and their histories in Singapore, the learning will shift to Indonesian contexts for the majority of the programme where you will engage with different contemporary art scenes and histories across the Indonesian cities of Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bandung. To fulfil the program requirements, you will be required to submit assessment tasks which draw on your in-country learning experience.

In 2023, this programme will be held during the Summer Semester A period, beginning Monday 30th October 2023, and will be led by Dr Michelle Antoinette. Applications have closed.

Architecture Global Study Tours

Each year the Department of Architecture runs Global Study Tours as part of select studios and studies units. These undergraduate and postgraduate offerings allow students to engage with real architecture, urban planning, and urban design projects with communities and stakeholders in both regional and global contexts. Global study tours are often supported by in-country institutions, schools, or practices. They can provide students with new perspectives as well as with new personal and professional connections to other students, practitioners and academics.

Past trips have taken students to Kunshan China, Kobe Japan, Galle Sri Lanka and Warsaw Poland - take a look at this video to find out more.

In 2023, Architecture ran the following trips:
