Profile

Di is a Lecturer (Education focused) and member of the Field Education Academic team in the Department of Social Work at Monash University.

Di has worked in direct practice as a social worker with over 30 years post qualifying experience, predominately working in the specialist family violence and sexual assault sectors, including working in women's refuges and in the Safe Steps family violence response service (then known as Refuge Referrals) in the early 1990's. Di went on to work in the Berry street family violence outreach program for a number of years supporting women and children escaping family violence, before working at the Centre Against Sexual Assault in the CBD for several years, providing counselling support to past and recent survivors of sexual violence.  In this role, Di worked closely with the Sexual offences and child abuse unit (SOCIT police) and with forensics at the Victorian Institute of Forensic medicine (VIFM). Di has worked at the Royal Women's hospital for over 25 years in different roles and has continued to practice as a weekend on-call hospital social worker.

Di managed the Victorian state wide sexual assault service for several years where she managed the daily operations and service delivery of the telephone crisis line, leading a team of front-line social workers and counsellors.  Di was a former member of the sexual assault peak body - SASVic from 2014 -2021 (formerly known as CASA forum).

As a Senior Social worker at the Royal Women's hospital, Di worked in Women's alcohol and drug service (WADS) for a few years, in collaboration with the addiction medicine specialist multidisciplinary team, providing casework, case management and discharge planning to pregnant women and new mothers with complex substance use dependency accessing antenatal and postnatal care. In this role Di worked closely with the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and with specialist AOD services and child protection. More recently Di has also worked in the SHRFV team as a Senior Family violence specialist practitioner providing secondary consultation and training to front line hospital staff.

Di previously worked as an external social work supervisor for Monash University Social Work students and joined the field education team as a Unit Coordinator for first year placements in 2022. Di is passionate about teaching the next generation of social workers and is committed to delivering high quality placements to Masters of social work students.
