How to apply

For our PhD program, Monash University uses a simple three-step application process. This first involves identifying a suitable academic supervisor willing to supervise the project (Step 1) and determining your eligibility for entry (Step 2). These two steps can be completed concurrently.

Step 1. Identify and contact a suitable academic supervisor

  • For a list of research groups in the Social Work Department click here.
  • For profiles of our academic staff and their areas of research click here.
  • Additional supervisors across Monash University can be identified through supervisor connect.

Step 2. Check your eligibility

All graduate research degrees have minimum academic entry requirements which must be met by all applicants. Some courses have additional requirements which are outlined in the relevant course entry in the Monash University handbook.  Our minimum academic entry requirements are outlined in our Graduate Research Admission Procedure and differ depending on the graduate research degree. Further information on admission criteria and process for graduate research degrees is available here and here.

For the purpose of pre-assessment of your eligibility for entry to the Higher Degrees by Research program in the Department of Social Work, please complete the following survey.

Once your survey is completed, the Director of Higher Degrees by Research will contact you regarding the outcome and potential next steps.

Step 3. Complete an Expression of Interest

If it is determined that you are eligible, and you have support from a supervisor willing to supervise your project,  you then need to complete an Expression of Interest form, signed by  an accredited  potential supervisor with Faculty/School endorsement. This can be used as an invitation to apply when submitting a research degree application (Step 3).
