Research profile

Siobhan Hardiman is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Social Work at Monash University, Australia. Prior to joining Monash University, Siobhan has been working in direct practice in Melbourne since 2006. Beginning in the youth drug and alcohol field with the Youth Substance Abuse Service, Siobhan worked with young people experiencing comorbid substance abuse and mental health issues, with a significant amount of the population she worked with having had experienced family and/or intimate partner violence.

Following this Siobhan worked with Anglicare Victoria and the Department of Child Protection for several years in the north-western region of Melbourne, with a case load predominately covering sexual and physical assault, including sibling incest and sexual assault from youth offenders. After this Siobhan moved to working in community settings through a local government organisation where the focus of her work centred on family violence and intimate partner violence in youth communities. In 2016 Siobhan wrote the Monash Young Women’s Leadership Program, an intervention targeting gender equity, intimate partner violence and empowerment within female identifying youth communities. This program was adopted by VicHealth in 2018 and replicated across several regions in Victoria. As a result, two affiliate programs for young men and young LGBTIQA+ people were established. Siobhan’s emerging research is into the efficacy and evidence base of intimate partner violence intervention programs in youth communities.

Since joining Monash University, Siobhan coordinates the Family Violence and Social Work Practice unit and Community Development and Group Work unit.
