Singapore Management University

Founded in 2000, Singapore Management University (SMU) introduced a new, modern pedagogy into Singapore and has become globally recognised for its finance programs. In an American approach to education, SMU students shape their own syllabuses in an interactive teaching environment that encourages participation and teamwork.

Academic Highlights

SMU has six schools: Accountancy, Economics, Information Systems, Law, Social Sciences and the Lee Kong Chian School of Business. SMU emphasises an interactive experience that combines a top-class curriculum and an excellent faculty with a culture of versatility and creativity.

Location

The purpose-built campus is in the Bugis-Bras Basah District in downtown Singapore, an area long associated with education and also a centre of commercial and cultural activity.

As a general rule, you don’t need to apply for a visa directly since it’s issued with your in-principle approval (IPA) letter which is provided by your host institution. Exchange students are also required to hold a valid Student Pass issued by the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). You will be notified of the Student Pass application by your host institution.

For more information on visas, please refer to the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore here and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority here.

SMU also provides some advice on visas (under Other Information - Student's Pass and Immigration).

It is compulsory for all incoming exchange students to purchase the Student Personal Accident Policy and Medical Insurance as recommended by SMU. Cost for this insurance is included as part of the miscellaneous fees. Find out more here.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

Various welcome activities are held to introduce you to campus life, which includes a buddy program. Find out more about orientation here.

SMU has a vibrant campus life for exchange students to enjoy, including special interest clubs, sport, and arts and cultural activities.
