Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS)

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, commonly known as “TUFS”, is the oldest institution devoted to international studies in Japan. It traces its roots back to the Institute for Research of Foreign Documents, a translation bureau established in 1857 under the Tokugawa shogunate.

Academic Highlights

Despite its small size, TUFS is renowned for educating a huge proportion of Japan’s diplomatic corps, including dozens of alumni becoming Japanese ambassadors. TUFS is one of the most selective universities in Japan and admits less than 1,000 students each year.

Location

TUFS is located in Fuchu, in the western suburbs of Tokyo, approximately 20 minutes from Shinjuku. It is an historic area of Tokyo, home to several ancient sites, shrines and museums.

Students at TUFS can major in one of 28 languages, and can take units in up to 80 languages, including regional dialects and indigenous languages seldom taught anywhere else in the world.

Language Requirements

• Students wishing to study in units taught in Japanese require an N2 level in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or higher or an equivalent. More information about JLPT can be found here.
• Students without an official JLPT test score can submit a formal recommendation letter from a Monash Japanese language teacher verifying that their proficiency meets the N2 equivalent level.
