Dr Iain Abbott is a Clinical Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases Physician at Alfred Health, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Translational Medicine, Monash University, supported with an NHMRC EL-1 Investigator Grant. Iain’s research investigates the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of UTIs, with successful international grant funding from the US FDA and the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR).

Iain is the current Vice-President of the Australian Society for Antimicrobials (ASA, 2023-present), Scientific Editor of the ASA Newsletter (2021-present), Chair of the Australian Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AUSCAST, 2023-present), the UTI theme lead for the Monash University Bladder and Kidney Health Discovery Program (2024-present), and European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Local Champion for Australia (2025-present), and member of the European Study Group for Urinary Tract Infections (ESGUTI, 2025-present).

AMR FOCUS
  • Understanding AMR in uropathogens via a prospective isolate repository collection
  • Optimising AMR treatment strategies by the pharmacodynamic profiling of antimicrobials in a dynamic bladder infection in vitro modelling
  • Phage-Antimicrobial synergy in MDR UTIs
IMPACT
  • Improving the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of drug-resistant and recurrent UTIs to help address a significant global UTI healthcare burden that affects >400 million people worldwide, and to preserve the activity of antimicrobials for the future.
